39 OH NINE

I bought this lot in 2000 with the sole purpose of building a unique and the most interesting home on Lake Austin. The seed of inspiration was sown in 2005 when my family and I stayed at the gorgeous hotel in Cabo, the Marquis los Cabos.

My flame of passion for architecture and construction was ignited with the creation of 402 Redbud Trail (www.homeasart.net/402) and the idea of bringing 3909 Westlake Drive to life eclipses even that project. After years of "tinkering", the overall design package is complete and to work with a specific buyer to tailor the living spaces to accomodate their needs and desires will be exciting.

The predominant concept behind the design for 3909 Westlake Drive is something I sculpted from that spectacular hotel in Mexico. The intangible feeling of freedom one gets when staying in a great hotel will be part of my design palette. The philosophy of separating private spaces from public spaces in a modern setting will be extremely evident. The architectural signature of this home will without question be the use of a Tensotherm translucent roofing membrane. Never being used before in the residential world, I plan to be the first to install this insulated, acoustically engineered and translucent roofing system to cover the 3000sf arched public living space. Having been installed in airports, stadiums and gymnasiums around the world for many years, this self-cleaning and daylighting material is the perfect product to bring my goal of transparency between the indoors and outdoors to life. To explore the product in more detail, see www.tensothermroofing.com/. The transparent interaction between indoors and outdoors and the play between land, water and sky are vital design elements.

The fluidity of movement will be paramount throughout this house. It will be a very functional, practical and low-maintenance home, not just an "art home". Interior spaces will be clean and devoid of "frills", yet attention will be paid to every last intricate detail. All exterior materials will be of natural and local sources in no need of persistent maintenance. The waterfall, lakeside boat dock and entertaining area and the “Texas-Zen” landscaping will compliment and complete the project.
